Community center reopens It took more than a year, but the town of Upper Marlboro has a community center again. The Upper Marlboro Community Center, which closed for renovations in January 2008, finally reopened its doors March 23 after a $600,000 renovation. And while it will not be offering organized programs for another couple months, residents said they are happy to have a local place where they can work out, play basketball or meet up with friends. Ed Stone of Upper Marlboro was working out on a chest press machine in the center fitness room Friday evening. Stone, who started coming to the Upper Marlboro center, at 5400 Marlboro Race Track Road, about 15 years ago, said he went to a community center in Bladensburg during the renovation process. But he kept tabs on the renovation process by making phone calls to the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission, which runs the center, and he made sure to be there on opening day, he said. say you can beat it, Stone said. is a little nicer, a little bigger than [the community center in Bladensburg] right now This is more convenient for me. work was needed to make the center compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, said Jonathan Jones, the center director. Contractors installed a ramp at the entrance, put seats in the showers so disabled people can sit down, among other changes, he said. M NCPPC also added new exercise equipment in the fitness room, put in three flat screen TVs and an updated security system, installed new floors, refinished the basketball court and repainted the facility, Jones said. Jones estimated that around 50 people have used the community center every day since it opened. Stone, sitting at his chest press machine, said he expects that number to increase as more people find out about it. can see a lot of people don know it opened at this point, because I used to see a lot more people here, he said. The community center has a gymnasium, racquetball courts, a multipurpose room, a dance studio, an outdoor tennis court, pavilion, playground and a meeting room that will double as an activity center for preschoolers. Organized activities, including basketball and soccer programs and lessons in ballet, aerobics and karate, will begin in the first week of June, said Paulette Dicks, the center program specialist. To register for activities, people must go to the center in person to set up an account, but after doing that they can sign up for programs online or by phone, she said. The center will also offer summer camp programs starting June 22, Dicks said. The cost is $210 for a two week session. But Jones said many of the center programs could spring from clients suggestions. the customer happy if a customer comes in and says he wants a chess club, by all means, Jones said. do what we can to make that a reality. fees range from $110 a year for access to the entire community center to $35 a year for the use of everything except the fitness room, Jones said. Children 17 or younger can sign up for identification cards that will give them free access. Jamar Belt, 17, of Marlton was shooting baskets in the gymnasium Friday evening. Jamar said he often comes to the community center to play basketball with his friends and is relieved to be back, he said.
